UPDATE: Train Accident on Moore Street

The driver of the vehicle that was struck by an Amtrak train at 2137 hours on Friday evening has been identified as 37-year old Tonya Owens of 5228 Blanchette Street in Hope Mills.

 

The preliminary investigation has revealed that Ms. Owens was operating a Chevrolet SUV when she entered into a construction area and became stuck on the railroad tracks, causing her vehicle to be struck by the train.  The other occupants of the vehicle have been identified as 13-year old Keiyanna Owens, 18-year old Brandon Merrick, 15-year old Jelisa Merrick and 9-year old Kiera Owens.  As a result of the accident, Ms. Owens and a passenger in the vehicle were transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with unknown injuries.  Their condition is not known at this time. 

 

Ms. Owens has been cited for driving into a construction work area.
