Couple Charged with Armed Robbery
On 10/27/2010 at 11:30am, Police responded to an armed robbery at the Grace’s Hallmark Store located at 2800 Raeford Road. Witnesses say a man came into the store with a knife and demanded money, then fled in a white truck with a female inside.              After canvassing the area, officers spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspects on Highway 301 and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver refused to stop and drove towards Hope Mills along Elk Road before crashing the vehicle on Josh Court.

Police detained the two suspects and the driver was transported to Cape Fear Valley Hospital with unknown injuries. The driver, Brandon Atlas Oxendine, 27, of 3537 Seawell Street was charged with Robbery With A Dangerous Weapon, 2nd Degree Kidnapping and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. Also arrested was Star Etta Morrison, 46, of 3524 Seawell Street, charged with Robbery With A Dangerous Weapon and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. Additionally, the Hope Mills Police Department is investigating an earlier incident that may have involved the same two suspects.

Both are repeat offenders and Oxendine has a prior criminal history that includes numerous larcenies, breaking and entering charges and possession of stolen goods. Police Chief Tom Bergamine continues to speak out on the impact that repeat offenders have in the community. “Here it is again,” said Chief Bergamine. “A repeat offender with a lengthy prior record back on the street stealing from those trying to earn an honest living. Repeat offenders continue to have an adverse effect on our society. We have to continue to work on innovative approaches to reduce these numbers. At the same time, we have to protect the victims of these crimes. It appears to me that as a society, folks forget about the victims.”  BRANDON ATLAS OXENDINE
