Citizens On Patrol Academy

The Fayetteville Police Department is looking for volunteers to sign up for its next Citizens on Patrol, (C.O.P.), training academy which will begin on Thursday, April 23, 2009.  The academy will run for 10 weeks and conclude with a graduation ceremony on July 23, 2009.

The C.O.P. program enlists the assistance of eligible community volunteers to become the “eyes and ears” of police officers.  These volunteers will become an important part of the department’s efforts to reduce crime and improve quality of life for all citizens.  C.O.P. volunteers will work in pairs and will report suspicious activity and criminal violations while patrolling their designated areas of responsibility in specially marked vehicles.

Each C.O.P. will have a police radio assigned along with a uniform.  No prior police training is needed.

C.O.P. volunteers will not have law enforcement authority or powers of arrest and are not to be confrontational.

The goal of this program is to assist officers with reducing crime and being proactive in our community.

To obtain additional information on the C.O.P. program or to apply, please contact Sergeant Steve McIntosh at (910) 433-1838.  Slots are limited to 15 participants. Applications can be obtained at the front desk of the Police Department.  Completed applications are due no later than April 13, 2009.

A thorough background and driving history check will be completed on all applicants.
