Traffic Fatality: MLK Freewa
On Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at approximately 1721 hours, the Fayetteville Police Department responded to an overturned motor vehicle on Martin Luther King Freeway near Gillespie Street. The initial investigation revealed a 2004 Suzuki SUV and a 2001 Lexus were both traveling southbound on the MLK Freeway when they collided.  After colliding with the Lexus the Suzuki SUV veered into the center median and overturned. The driver of the Suzuki SUV has been identified as Natasha Corinne Matthews, 24 years of age, of Rockford Drive, Fayetteville. Mrs. Matthews died on scene as a result of her injuries. Also occupying the Suzuki was Valerie Annette Groves, 24 years of age, of Lasalle Avenue, Fayetteville. Ms. Groves was airlifted to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital and her condition is unknown at this time. A third passenger in the Suzuki SUV, a 3 year old female was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with minor injuries.The driver of the 2001 Lexus SUV has been identified as Yaneth Perez, 45 years of age, of Heartline Drive, Fayetteville. Ms. Perez and two passengers in the Lexus were uninjured.The Fayetteville Police Department’s Traffic Unit is currently conducting the investigation. Traffic on the MLK Freeway was shut down for approximately 4 hours during the incident and has now been reopened.  Charges are being withheld pending the investigation.
