On 6/12/2010 at approximately 3:30pm, Fayetteville Police responded to a report of vandalism on North Cool Spring Street.
Upon arrival, police observed that more than fifty headstones were damaged and in disarray at the Cross Creek Cemetery #1.
Established in 1785, many of Fayetteville's prominent early citizens are buried here. The oldest Confederate monument in N.C., crafted by noted Scottish stone mason George Lauder, honors the Confederate and Union soldiers buried near Cross Creek in unmarked graves.
An investigation is underway regarding the damage and police are asking anyone with information on suspects to please contact Crime Stoppers at 483-TIPS.
