UPDATE: Accident on Gillis H

The preliminary investigation into a serious traffic accident that occurred at 2251 hours last evening has revealed the following:

20-year old Dana Royal of Perry Oliver Drive, Hope Mills, was traveling north-east on Gillis Hill Road when she lost control of her vehicle causing it to leave the roadway.  While attempting to return to the road, she overcorrected her vehicle and crashed head-on into an oncoming van driven by 46-year old Terry Coonfield, of N. Main Street, Raeford. The impact of the crash was such that it caused Mr. Coonfields vehicle to leave the roadway and come to rest in the bushes.

Upon arrival to the scene, Officer Mark Jodoin noticed fire coming from the front of the van.  He additionally identified two occupants inside the vehicle.  After extinguishing the fire, Jodoin was able to pull Mr. Coonfield out of the van.  The passenger, Ardella Coonfield, identified as Mr. Coonfields mother, remained trapped in the vehicle until the Fire Department arrived.  There is no update on their conditions at this time.

Dana Royal, who has been determined to be at fault in the accident, was airlifted to UNC Chapel Hill, where she remains in critical condition.

There is no additional information available at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
