Police Encourage Crime Prevention for Fenced-In Lots
The Fayetteville Police Department would like to offer fenced-in business lot owners safety tips to avoid being targeted by thieves due to a concentration of break-ins that has occurred in the Yadkin and Raeford Road areas primarily in car storage lots.  Reports show an increase in the theft of catalytic converters from automobiles, which contain precious metals and can be valuable when sold in the underground market. Other thefts have also involved car batteries and stereos from these lots as well. Businesses, such as car lots, should understand and follow crime prevention techniques to help avoid being victimized. Business owners should respond to alarm calls at the lot since police officers may not be able to determine what is missing. Fences make it difficult for officers to check on businesses of this sort unless a designated person is there to answer questions.  In addition, business owners should consider avoiding storage in a secluded area, an area that is not well lit, a lot without an alarm system or storing a high concentration of vehicles with targeted items in the same general area. Investigators are searching for suspects in the recent break-ins and are implementing procedures to catch future suspects but are requesting the help of business owners in the prevention of these crimes. If you have information on these crimes, please call 433-1856 or 483-TIPS.
