Armed Intruder Shot Entering Home

On 8/1/2010 at 11:30pm, Fayetteville Police were notified that an armed man walked into the front yard of 299 Decatur Drive and forced two females inside the home at gunpoint in an attempted robbery. As the suspect began ordering the victims around, a male occupant of the home shot the suspect twice with a shotgun. The injured suspect then fled on foot.

As officers were responding to the call, dispatch received another call that a man was driving the injured suspect to Fire Station #9, which is adjacent to the Cross Creek District Police Sub-Station. Medics treated the suspect and he was then transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for further treatment.

The suspect is identified as Armon Leroi Mattox, 27, of 1508 Palmer Drive. The driver of the vehicle, Kendall Leon Wortham, 27, of 238 Partners Way was charged with possession of cocaine during the incident. Both men are repeat offenders.

Police Chief Tom Bergamine, whose department is enjoying its lowest crime rate in ten years, has taken a vocal stance against repeat offenders who continue to commit crimes over and over again, negatively skewing Fayetteville’s crime index rating. The incident is currently being investigated by the Major Crimes Bureau of the Fayetteville Police Department.
